Defining arrival through spatial layering

In this private residence in Calabasas, California, the transition from entryway to living space is carefully articulated through a suspended entryway divider. Designed in collaboration with 2-LA Design, the intervention introduces a subtle yet deliberate spatial threshold—one that preserves openness while creating a sense of arrival. Rather than enclosing the entry, the Facet entryway divider establishes a layered interior experience. Upon entering, sightlines are gently filtered, offering a moment of pause before the space unfolds further into the home. The result is a balanced composition between privacy and openness, where light, transparency and structure coexist.

A sculptural entryway divider

The Facet system operates as more than a functional partition. Composed of individually rotatable, diamond-shaped modules, the entryway divider allows for a dynamic interplay between opacity and transparency. By adjusting the orientation of the facets, the level of visual permeability can be tuned—ranging from a more enclosed entry condition to a lighter, more transparent expression. This adaptability introduces a performative quality to the divider: light is not merely passing through, but actively shaped. Throughout the day, subtle shifts in reflection and shadow animate the surface, reinforcing the divider’s presence as both architectural element and spatial filter.

Customization within a fixed framework

For this project, the entryway divider was tailored to the specific dimensions of the space, ensuring a precise fit within the architectural envelope. Suspended from the ceiling, the system maintains a light footprint, avoiding any interruption of the floor plane while enhancing the vertical rhythm of the interior. Available in a range of finishes and fully customizable in size, the Facet entryway divider enables designers to integrate a partition that aligns with both spatial requirements and aesthetic intent.
