Defining Space in an Open Office Without Compromise

In contemporary workplaces, the question is no longer how to create space, but how to shape it. How do you introduce structure within a large open office while preserving light, openness and a sense of identity? This project in Amsterdam explores a considered approach: a large office partition that defines zones within a modern open workspace, while maintaining a continuous visual flow.

Zoning a Large Open Workspace

Designed by Monica Straathof of Ideal Projects, the office began as a generous, open environment. The ambition was to introduce clarity — reception, circulation and workspaces — without resorting to fixed architectural elements. A suspended large office partition brings a sense of order to the space. Positioned with precision, it defines zones while maintaining sightlines across the interior. The result is a layout that feels structured, yet remains open and connected. In projects where flexibility and openness need to coexist, this approach offers a compelling alternative to traditional partitions.

An Architectural Presence

Spanning a significant width, the partition becomes part of the architecture rather than an addition to it. Its layered composition introduces rhythm and depth, interacting quietly with materials and daylight. As light moves through the space, the surface reveals a pattern that shifts subtly with perspective. The large office partition anchors the interior without ever dominating it — present, yet deliberately restrained.

Brand Identity as Part of the Space

For Redevco, identity is closely tied to the environments it shapes. Instead of applying branding as a separate element, Ideal Projects chose to embed it within the spatial composition itself. The logo is revealed through a carefully positioned opening within the partition — aligned with the underlying grid and framed in relation to the reception. As you move through the space, it appears and recedes, creating moments of recognition without demanding attention. Because the system is defined by a modular grid, it allows for a high degree of compositional freedom. Openings, patterns and forms can be shaped with precision, enabling elements such as branding to be integrated directly into the architecture. Through the lens of Valerie Clarysse, this layered relationship between foreground and background becomes even more pronounced. The partition acts as a subtle filter, softening and revealing the brand within the space.

A Layered Approach to Openness and Privacy

Rather than dividing the office into fixed zones, the intervention introduces a more fluid boundary. Light filters softly through the partition, offering glimpses of the space beyond without ever fully revealing it. The faceted surface adds a tactile quality that shifts with movement and perspective. From afar, it reads as a calm, cohesive volume; up close, it reveals a more intricate structure. This balance makes the large office partition particularly suited to environments where openness and discretion need to coexist.

Designed for Scale and Specificity

Developed in response to the scale of the space, the partition is conceived as a precise composition rather than a standard element. Its dimensions, proportions and suspension are carefully calibrated, allowing it to span the office with a light visual presence. The result is a solution that feels both architectural and adaptable — capable of defining space without fixing it.

Ideal Projects: Designing Beyond the Expected

Guided by intuition and a willingness to challenge convention, Ideal Projects approaches each workspace as an opportunity to rethink how people and environments interact. In this project for Redevco, that mindset translates into a workplace where spatial design, identity and experience are closely intertwined — creating an environment that feels both considered and effortless.
